In this article, New Orleans vein specialist Dr. Randall S. Juleff challenges you to what appears to be a simple task of imagination – imagine what your life would be like if you didn’t have varicose veins. While this may sound simple, trust us when we say that your ability to do this may be related to how long you’ve had varicose veins, and the length of time you’ve spent trying to ignore them and pretend that they’re not having any significant effect on your life.
At our Mandeville vein clinic, under the care of our New Orleans vein specialist, we urge patients to perform this exercise because of stories that many of them have told us. For example, one patient reacted to this challenge by saying, “I don’t know if I can imagine this – I’ve had varicose veins since I was 30, and before that my mother and grandmother had them. Varicose veins have become so much a part of life that I don’t know what life would be like without them.” We persisted in urging this patient to imagine life without varicose veins, and now she’s free of them. Perhaps this exercise in imagination will do the same for you.
Start by imagining yourself in front of a full-length mirror and having the first thing you notice about yourself NOT be your varicose veins
This may be harder than you suspect. If you’re like most people who have been trying to “live with” their swollen and discolored veins for months or even years, your varicose veins are the first thing your eyes travel to when you look at yourself in a mirror. You tend to focus on them. Chances are your friends and family and loved ones don’t focus on them in this way; when they think of you or see you on the street, the first thing that catches their eye is probably your great smile, or your sparkling eyes. But if you’ve been trying to live with varicose veins for some time, they’re the first things you see in every mirror. They are often the first thing you think of when you think about what it means to be “you.”
Here’s a hint – and the purpose of this exercise: Your varicose veins are not you, and you don’t have to live with them. Advances in venous medicine have made it possible for you to seek treatment for your varicose veins in New Orleans and be free of them, in a remarkably short time. You can literally have these ugly veins removed on your lunch hour, and then return to work – that is how fast and easy it is to make this exercise of the imagination a reality.
Now imagine what life could be like without the side effects of varicose veins
Start with imagining what it would be like to NOT have legs that feel tired and weak all the time. Or, if you’ve managed to avoid treatment for your varicose veins long enough, if your legs were NOT so chronically swollen and painful all the time that you could actually walk normal distances, or stand for more than a few minutes without feeling weak. Tough to imagine, isn’t it? If you’ve been trying to ignore your varicose veins for some time, feeling tired, weak, and constantly in pain has probably become what you think of as your “normal life.”
We’re asking you to perform this exercise in imagination to remind you that it’s NOT normal – the pain and discomfort you’re by now used to feeling are the side effects of a disease called chronic venous insufficiency, or CVI, and until you have that disease treated, you’re probably going to continue feeling like this – old before your time. Again, you don’t have to feel like this. Removing varicose veins also removes the disease that’s making you feel this weak and disabled.
