Radiofrequency Ablation

About the procedure
Radiofrequency ablation is a varicose vein disease treatment that uses high-frequency electrical energy to heat up and destroy problem veins. The procedure involves inserting a small, flexible tube into a vein. Radiofrequency energy is then directed through the tube, which causes the vein to collapse and ultimately disappear.

Why it’s done
Radiofrequency ablation is a minimally invasive alternative to other vein surgeries. It is used to eliminate the appearance and/or symptoms of varicose veins.

What to expect
Preparation: Your vein specialist will tell you how to prepare for radiofrequency ablation treatment.

During: Your doctor will use an ultrasound device to guide a small, thin tube into the target vein. Radiofrequency energy will then be delivered through the tube. This energy will heat up the vein wall and destroy it, after which the vein will disappear. The procedure usually takes less than an hour.

After: You should be able to resume your normal activities the day after radiofrequency ablation treatment. Your doctor may recommend that you avoid intense exercise or heavy lifting for about a week.
