Radiofrequency Ablation Q & A

What is radiofrequency ablation?

Radiofrequency ablation is an innovative and minimally invasive treatment for varicose veins. The procedure uses radiofrequency energy to heat your varicose vein, creating scar tissue that closes the vein. The process of using heat to create scar tissue is called ablation.

What happens during radiofrequency ablation treatments?

During your treatment, you lie on a treatment bed, and Dr. Juleff numbs your leg with a local anesthetic. Once your leg is numb, he makes a small incision in your leg and uses ultrasound imaging to guide a catheter through your vein until it reaches the varicose vein.

Once the catheter is in place, Dr. Juleff turns on the radiofrequency energy which creates heat in your varicose vein. He slowly withdraws the heated catheter through the varicose vein and the vein seals behind the catheter, draining the vein and closing it off. When the catheter is fully withdrawn, he puts pressure on the incision site to stop any bleeding, applies a bandage, and puts a compression stocking on your leg.

A radiofrequency ablation treatment for varicose veins usually takes about an hour.

How should I prepare for a radiofrequency ablation treatment?

Dr. Juleff provides customized pre-treatment advice. If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, or if you have any allergies or intolerances, let Dr. Juleff know before you schedule your procedure. You should also provide Dr. Juleff with a list of any medications you’re taking, including prescription or over-the-counter drugs, vitamins, and supplements. Wear loose, comfortable clothing on the day of your procedure.

How should I take care of my legs after treatment?

Following your treatment, you can go home to relax; Dr. Juleff will give you specific aftercare instructions. You should be able to get back to your normal activities the following day, although you may want to avoid strenuous exercise or heavy lifting for a week or so after your treatment. You’ll need to wear compression socks, and Dr. Juleff may prescribe medications to ease any discomfort and promote healing.
